Most common roofing options are listed below in order of cost from most reasonable to most expensive.
Asphalt shingles – most cost efficient
Metal roofing – more durable and stylish
Wood shingles – classic and naturally beautiful
Clay, cement and fiber cement tile – while lightweight and durable, these roofs are very popular in warmer climates
Single-ply/built up roofing (white roofs) – best option for flat roofs
Plastic or composite shingles – look like wood shakes and slate but are more expensive HOWEVER they last longer and are less of a fire hazard.
Natural slate – the ultimate in beauty and stability, lasting 100 years or more
TYPES OF ROOFING
Shingle:
Primary to all visible damage is the health of your shingles. Are they visibly worn? Does your roof appear to have bald spots? The bald spots may indicate that the reflective granules are not protecting your home from excess heat and once exposed the asphalt will dry out and crack leaving your roof vulnerable to leaks and other weather damage.
Curled shingles may look bad, but they also indicate wind-driven moisture may be allowing leaks to form. Additionally, if your shingles are cracked the same may happen.
Make sure your roof deck underlayment is undamaged as well. The roof deck is laid under the shingles and is the first line of defense to prevent moisture. Examples of types of underlayment are, asphalt and synthetic
Metal roofing
It’s all the rage these days. From Barndominiums to luxury estates, metal roofing has come a long way in the last few decades. A metal roof is a roofing system made from metal pieces or tiles characterized by its high resistance, impermeability and longevity. Zinc, copper and steel alloys are commonly used.
Benefits of a metal roof are:
White roof/Cool Roof (single ply flat covering)
We live in CENTRAL TEXAS! Heat is a primary concern and anyone who has worn black on a hot Texas day knows that it’s a heat magnet. A white roof is painted with solar reflective white coating and reflects up to 90% of the sun’s damaging rays. White roofs keep buildings cool and reduce energy use, while guarding against warping and cracking caused by excess heat.
AND ITS GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. There is much less roofing waste for the landfills.
